Artist Spotlight: Lynn Keller
Over the years, Chicago-born bassist Lynn Keller has built quite an impressive resume. Probably best known as the touring bass player for Diana Ross, Lynn has also appeared with Nell Carter, Michelle Shocked, Stevie Wonder, and Rita Coolidge, where she also served as musical director. Lynn recognizes the importance of playing a reliable, great-sounding instrument, which is why she chose Variax Bass 705. "I was really excited about it [Variax Bass]," explains Lynn. "For the options that I need, this is perfect. I can imagine using it on a million different gigs and on a million different sessions." And she will.

For her latest gig, Lynn is playing bass in the orchestra pit for the musical "Sister Act," a production where an upright bass is a necessity. "As with most Broadway musicals, there are big numbers that require an upright bass," Lynn explains. "So this bass really fit the bill. It’s got a wonderful sound, great resolution, and I can fit it in a very cramped space, like an orchestra pit." The unique features of Variax Bass also played a big role in the production of the musical itself.
When the orchestrator for Sister Act found out that Lynn was using Variax Bass, he took full advantage of the instruments unique sonic capabilities. "Had I been someone playing an upright and an electric bass, I could not play one of these songs," explains Lynn. "This song was actually written in such a manner that I have to switch bass sounds within a bar." For this one particularly raucous number, Lynn switches seamlessly between the upright setting and the 8-string setting to get that great "nasty" sound that she was looking for.
So whether she's playing in the orchestra pit, recording an album, or scoring music for TV and film, Lynn Keller relies on Variax Bass 705 to get that perfect tone every time.
